Challenging Minds
We all question our ability at times. Uncertainty plagues us. It is even more intense if the ability we are questioning relates to something we have never tried or not succeeded at in the past.
As our children progress in school, the faculty begins to challenge the students thinking and relies more on exploration and application of facts to situations. The first need in education is to assess the problem that is presented and come up with a solution.
I witnessed a lab that was presented to Mr. McKie's Physics class in September. The challenge was to protect an egg that was dropped from the balcony. The students were allowed to design their own creations and test them against classmates' creations. The reward for the students was the 'egg drop challenge", but the real learning took place before that. The students had to create their own hypothesis and develop a workable solution. The ultimate creation was one that light and durable. Melissa Drott was the winner, but all students benefited by this innovative lesson.
I am sure that each of us can identify specific experiences that have shaped our beliefs and even shaped our personalities. It is these "Moments" that have collectively made us who we are today.
