Mustangs win with Defense
The Stanton Mustangs traveled to Scribner to face the
Scribner-Snyder Trojans in District C2-4 action on Friday night.
The Mustangs defense rose to the occassion and held the Trojans to
less than 200 yards and forced 5 turnovers in a 20-7 victory. The
win moves the Mustangs to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in District play.
"There are alot of good teams in our district and any team could
beat any other one on a given night. The District Championship is
far from being decided", said Coach Greg Hansen.
The game's first touchdown was scored by Senior Paul Cheyney on a
"heads-up" defensive fumble recovery and return of 34 yards. Senior
Mark Tomka caused the fumble. "Paul was very aware and scooped the
ball up and out ran them to the endzone", said Defensive
Coordinator Dave Stoddard. "Mark had a tremendous defensive game
from his defensive tackle spot, making 5 tackles for loss and
forcing 2 fumbles." The rest of the first half was a defensive
struggle seeing both offenses effected by the wet and windy weather
and the sloppy field. "At halftime we made a couple of simple
adjustments that paid off in the second half", said Hansen. In the
second half the Mustangs took control of the game building a 20-0
lead on two Senior Tate Erbst runs from 66 and 32 yards. Erbst had
170 yards rushing on the night on 23 carries. After giving the
Trojans only score of the night (28 yard TD pass), the Mustangs
defense came up big in the fourth quarter. The Trojans managed to
move the ball down to the Mustangs 5 yard line midway through the
4th quarter. The Stangs "D" was able to overpower the Trojan
offense, holding them out on a fourth down try from the 2 yard
line. Four minutes later the Mustangs forced the Trojans to turn
the ball over on downs again, deep in Mustang territory as
Sophomore Micheal Eberly batted down a 4th down pass in the
endzone. Junior Brian Qualls put his own personal touch on the game
as he sacked and stripped the Trojan QB on Scribner-Snyder's next
drive. Cheyney then ended any hopes of a Trojan miracle comeback as
he intercepted a pass at the 10 yard line to seal the win for the
Mustangs. "I was very pleased with the overall effort of our
defense tonight", said Hansen. "We will have to get our offense
going if we want to make any kind of run at this thing though." The
Mustangs next host the (2-3) Plainview Pirates on Friday night.
"This game will be a great challenge for us as Plainview now runs
the Double Wing offense as well", commented Hansen. "Their players
play very hard and they have a very good and mobile
quarterback."
