Freshman Boys Basketball Openers

By Jason Brown

December 14, 2009

2/7 Madison - The freshman team traveled to Madison for their first contest of the year and got the season started off right with a great defensive effort. Strong pressure defense limited Madison's ability to do anything offensively as the Mustangs raced out to an early 16-2 lead. Overall the team didn't have their best shooting night, but their aggressive offensive rebounding continued to put points on the board. Madison was able to make a late charge by hitting some tough 3's, but I was proud of our composure in taking care of the ball and hitting free throws down the stretch. Kodi Erbst led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points, while Adam Krentz chipped in with 9 and Tucker Lanz helped out with 8.

12/12 West Point-Beemer - The Mustangs opened the Wisner tournament with a tight game against West Point -Beemer. Defense and rebounding again were the keys to victory as we never let West Point-Beemer get comfortable in their offense. We had some real smart and unselfish play in getting the ball to our posts, who we thought had a big advantage on the offensive end. Blake Heppner had a strong effort with 18 points, with Justice Hahlbeck knocking down a key 3 and Adam Krentz calmly hitting two free throws to ice it.

12/12 Wisner-Pilger - The guys came out with an intense effort after losing a tough JV game to Wisner-Pilger just a few nights earlier. The Mustangs hounded the ball all over the floor on the defensive end, and offensively the lightbulb started to come on as we did a great job of moving the ball and stretching the Wisner zone. Our progress was fantastic considering the small amount of practice we were able to get in during the week. Adam Krentz led the way with 9, Blake Heppner chipped in 8, Stephen Peterson, Kodi Erbst and Cole Beyke all totaled 7, and Eustin Frisch finished with 6. The team is excited to have a win in the first tournament of the year and hoping they can repeat their success.
