Wrestlers Make a Strong Start at Creighton

We traveled to Creighton for our first meet of the season with 5 wrestlers without varsity experience. Wow did they come through in the 17 team tournament by scoring 138 points for a 6th place finish. We are very excited with the season we can have if we come to wrestle like this each day in practice. Make sure you join us Saturday December 12th for the Stanton Invite.

Jake Betzen a 103 freshmen finished 5th by defeating Brady Wurdeman-Winside 7-0. He also defeated Parker Olson HCC by a pin. He lost to Jacob Weber Parkston 8-4 and Pete Hernandez Crofton 14-0. The nice thing about Jake is he never quits.

Colby Wolff a 112 freshmen came to wrestle today by placing 3rd losing only to Garrett Bowder Pender in OT 2-4. He beat Tyler Thompson Pender 10-0, Evan Aschoff Plainview 2-1 and then Lake Thompson BC 5-0 in OT. He showed us the wrestler he will be by never quitting and believing n what he is doing.

Mick Clausen a 119 sophomore finished 3rd losing to Myles Bialas Parkston pin. He then defeated Dominic Pedersen 12-5 and by default, pinned Owen Pavelka Creighton. He has really worked hard to perfect his technique and his mat awareness.

Grant Nordby a 130 junior finished 2nd losing by pin to Dominic Miller Crofton. He defeated Brendan Seick Pender by a pin, Zane Christensen N-O by a pin, and then decisioned Brad Lanman 9-2. He wrestled very well setting up his shots and controlling off the top.

Brennan Borgmann a 140 freshmen wrestled hard by finishing 6th due to match limit. He pinned Jory Koch Winside, lost to Norfolk High’s Mitch Lienemann 6-1, majored Wade Oelsligle EV 14-4, decisioned Jon Follette Norfolk High 8-3, and lost 2-1 to Robbie Thomsen Pender.

Senior Paul Cheyney 145 started his season out by winning the championship over Kalin Koch 3-1 in a great match. He also defeated Joe Schieffer Parkston 2-1 and pinned Blake Reppert Pender. He did a fantastic job of dictating his matches and got stronger as the match went on.

Jeb Nordby a 160 freshmen finished 6th due to a match limit. He lost to Tyler Steinkraus Plainview 4-3, beat Brad Doffin Winside 4-0, pinned Jake Nordhues Norfolk High, lost by a pin to Joe Hyke Parkston and beat Spencer Frederick Creighton. He learned how to fight every match and that he will contend in the end as he grows into his weight.

A 171 Junior Jacob Bohac is a welcomed addition to the team as he finished 2-2 on the day. Losing to Landon pospisil Creighton by a pin, beat Cody Kralicek Osmond by a pin, beat Daniel Wilcox Norfolk High, lost by a pin to Matt Semmier Parkston. By the middle of the season with the mat time he will gain over that time he will be a force and I love that he doesn’t quit.

Bryant Borgmann a 215 junior wrapped up the day by winning the weight with a pin of Russ Volquardsen Creighton. He also beat Anthony Nelson Winside 1-0, pinned Austin Bertram Parkston. His speed will kill everyone he wrestles if he uses it to his advantage like he did today.

We travelled to Plainview to dual them. We lost 44-33, but again turned in some great performances. Grant Nordby put us up 3-0 after winning 9-3 over Nick Niles. Brennan Borgmann turned in a great performance against Dalton Bevill losing 5-3 to tie the score at 3-3. Plainview went up 9-3 as we were open at 140. We tied it up when Paul Cheyney received an open. The next two weights Plainview went ahead 21-9 as we were open. Jeb Nordby avenged a loss from earlier in the year by pinning Tyler Steinkraus to pull us within 21-16. Jacob Bohac loss 16-1 to Steven Christensen to push their lead to 26-16. We picked up a forfeit with Bryant Borgmann when they didn’t send their guy out to close their lead to 26-21. They then picked up a forfeit at 285 and a pin of Jake Betzen by Corby Forbes to run their lead to 38-21. Colby Wolff pinned Evan Aschoff and Mick Clausen pinned Austin Pittet to close their lead to 38-33. Michael McCarthy at 125 wrestling for the first time gave a great effort but fell short by a pin for the final score.

Stanton hosted the Stanton Invite where 20 teams showed up for the all out contest. Starting with round one it was a dogfight every single match with the last one finishing up about 8:45 p.m. We would finish with 146 points and in 5th place as a team. I know not many people witnessed this team and their determination but they are showing signs of being their in the end, and not one gives up in his quest for a win.

Jake Betzen finished 3rd by pinning TK Fryklind-AB, Konner Lamb LOU, and Ross Podliska-BC and lost 14-0 to Pete Hernanzez-CRO.

Colby Wolff finished 2nd losing to Lake Thompson-BC 4-2 after beating Dylan Gaudreault-MAD 4-0, Evan Aschoff-PLA 6-1, and Derek Henn EPPJ by a pin.

Mick Clausen finished 4th by beating Dominic Pedersen-CRO 6-4, Autin Pittet-PLA pin,and lost by pins to Nick Young-BC and Wyatt Jacobson-WAK.

Grant Nordby finished 5th losing to Dallas Lemmers-LOU by a pin, then won over Joey Sierra-Clear with a pin, 7-3 over Alex Kowalski-MAD 7-3, and match limit over Gustavo Avilia-MAD.

Brennan Borgmann finished 6 due to match limit, won over Shane Vanis-EPPJ pin, Dustin Whipple-CRO pin, and 8-2 over Nathan Anderson-EPPJ, lost to Josh Esinemann-MAD 11-4 and Dalton Bevill-PLA pin.

Paul Cheyney won the Stanton Invite by defeating Jacob Nelson-WAk by a pin, Ben Burmester-PEN with a pin, Kevin Jacobson-OC in OT 7-5, and in OT 5-3 over Jake Smutny-MAD.

Jacob Bohac went 0-2 losing 8-1 to Alberta Marcial-MAD and 4-3 to Levi Hesse-PEN. He is making great strides and will show up in January as a force after more mat time.

Bryant Borgmann won the Stanton Invite by pinning Jeremy Pirok-PEN, Isiah Williams-MAD and Jason Wragge-PEN in the finals, while scoring an 8-0 defeat of Jared Seier-EPPJ.
