| BACKGROUND How do students learn science? Decades ago, many educators believed students were empty vessels into which one could pour the pure wisdom gained by humans over centuries. Now, it is understood that students come to science class with firmly-held beliefs about how the world works. Students themselves have formed these views of the world and found them to be consistent with everyday life. The four broad goals of a science education curriculum include: Attitudes: To develop students' attitudes of curiosity and involvement with occurrences in their environment; to develop an appreciation for the contributions of science; and to recognize the value of solving problems in a scientific manner. Processes: To develop those intellectual processes of inquiry by which scientific problems and occurrences are explained, predicted, and/or controlled. Knowledge: To develop knowledge of facts, terminology, concepts, generalizations, and principles that help students confront and interpret occurrences in their environment. Skills: To develop students' abilities to handle, construct, and manipulate materials and equipment in a productive and safe manner; and to develop the ability to measure, organize, and communicate information. |
