Mustang Volleyball Captures Wins

By Sarah Klinetobe

September 27, 2009

The Mustang Volleyball team captured two wins last week against Pender and Plainview.  The first win came when the Mustangs traveled to Pender on Tuesday night for a triangular.  They played the Pender Pendragons first and won their first game of the season in two sets,

25-16 and 26-24.  The girls came out fired up and never let down, commented Coach Klinetobe.  Sam Unger led the team in serving with 16/16 and four aces.  Also serving 100% from the line was Alyssa Estes 9/9, Dasi Sieh 8/8, Miranda Clausen 7/7, and Allison Flood 2/2.  Unger led the team with nine kills, followed by Clausen with five and Whitney Heppner with four.  Set assists was led by Sieh with sixteen.  Heppner had two blocks recorded for the night.  Defensively, the Mustangs were led again by Unger with nine digs.  Aubrey Warnke had seven, Clausen had six, and Kelsey Bernbeck followed with five digs.

The second game of the night the Mustangs faced third ranked Wisner-Pilger Gators.  The gators had a great serving team that dished out ace serve after ace serve to the Mustangs.  The gators also had a solid net offensively and defensively, which hindered the Mustangs for the game.  The gators defeated the Mustangs in two sets, 12-25 and 3-25.  Dasi Sieh led in serves for the night with 4/4.  Sieh also had five set assists and three digs.  The only kills recorded for the game came from Unger with five and Clausen with two.  Clausen also led with four digs and Unger had three.

On Thursday night, the Mustangs traveled to Plainview to face the pirates.  The girls bounced back after playing Wisner-Pilger and came away with win number two for the season in four sets against the pirates, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, and 25-20.   All four sets were close but the Mustangs stayed focused through each set.  This was the best service game this year, commented Coach Klinetobe, as there were only five total service errors.  Serving 100% from the line for the night was Whitney Heppner 17/17 with four aces and Alyssa Estes 13/13.  Unger had 15/16 with one ace, Clausen 14/15 with one ace, Sieh 14/15, Bernbeck 12/13, and Pestel 1/2.   Kills for the night was led by Unger with eleven, Heppner followed with five, Pestel and Bernbeck had three each, and Clausen had two.  Set assists was led by Sieh with a game high of twenty.  Heppner and Pestel had a great night at the net with three solo blocks each.  Clausen led defensively with seventeen digs, followed by Cheyney with fourteen and Warnke with twelve.  Unger led in serve receives with 16/18 to the target.

C Team

The Stanton C Team girls saw a lot of playing time on Monday night during a triangular at Wisner.  In the two games, they played Dodge and Wisner-Pilger.  There were six girls who served 100% from the service line.  Alyssa Estes, 12/12 with one ace, TC West 5/5, Sam Oestriech 2/2, Kelsey Colwell 7/7 with one ace, and Shaila Quinn 2/2.   Zaidya Hirschman contributed 16/14 with one ace.  The girls have been working hard with their serving progress.  During the triangular, many girls were switched to different positions due to injuries.  Coach Benson was very proud of their efforts to try the new positions as it benefited the team.

On Thursday night, they traveled to Plainview for a dual against the pirates.  Unfortunately the game ended in a loss, 23-25 and 8-25.  Many of the girls had high percentages in all aspects of the game but just couldn’t pull through.  Alyssa Estes had an outstanding night with 100% in serves 7/7 with one ace, 3/3 in serve receives, 19/19 with 3 assists in setting, 4/4 in spiking, and 1/1 in digs.  Paige Moore and Sydney Schellpeper also had 100% from the service line.  TC West and Zaidya Hirschman both had 100% in serve receives.  Sam Oestriech had 100% in sets, spikes, and digs.  Kelsey Colwell had a perfect game from the spike line.  Due to an injury to Katrina Sperl, Shaila Quinn had to fill her position for the night and had a perfect game setting the ball.
