Mustangs Prevail in Double Wing Matchup
The Stanton Mustangs hosted the Plainview Pirates on Friday night
in a non-district matchup pitting two Double Wing offenses against
each other. "Plainview had a coaching change over the summer and
they went to the Double Wing offense. Coaching against it reminds
me of why we run the offense; it's tough to defend", said Coach
Hansen. The Mustangs grinded their way to their fourth victory of
the season outlasting the Pirates 16-6. Senior Paul Cheyney had a
standout night with 165 yards rushing and a touchdown on 10
carries, a touchdown reception, and three interceptions on defense.
The game's first touchdown was scored on a Cheyney 51 yard reverse
play in the 2nd quarter. "We saw their secondary really flowing
hard to the playside, so we knew that play might go big", said
Hansen. "Once Paul gets in the open field, not too many guys are
going to catch him." The Pirates threatened late in the third
quarter, actually getting the ball into the endzone for an apparent
touchdown. But an assisting the ball carrier penalty negated the
score. Then on second down the Plainview QB was intercepted in the
endzone by Cheyney to stop the drive. Senior Bo Qualls applied
tremendous pressure, forcing the QB to throw before he was ready.
The Mustangs then opened the fourth quarter with a methodical
drive, scoring on a Sophomore Spencer Nickolite pass to Cheyney
from 6 yards out. Sophomore Justice Halhbeck added a two point
conversion reception to extend the lead to 16-0. With four minutes
to play the Pirates showed they still had alot of fight in them as
they broke several tackles and long runs to get the ball down to
the Mustangs 9 yard line with 1:14 to play. On fourth down the
Plainview QB faked a handoff right and bootlegged left for the
Pirates lone score of the night. "We really need to focus on
wrapping up when we tackle", said Hansen. "There were 2 or 3 times
on the last drive alone that we had the ballcarrier hit, but just
didn't wrap up." The Mustangs then milked the remaining minute off
the clock to preserve the win. "It wasn't pretty, but we'll take
it", said Hansen. The Mustangs are now 4-2 (1-1 in the district)
and tied for the district lead. "Another district championship is
well within our ability." The Mustangs next host the Fremont Bergan
Knights (4-2) on Friday night for Parents Night. "This is an
offense that we don't see very often, so we will need to have a
great and highly focused week of practice", commented Hansen.
"Bergan is well-coached and has some tremendous athletes in their
skilled positions."
