Season Comes to a Close for Mustang Volleyball
The Mustang volleyball team had their first round of district play last Monday night in Logan View against Oakland-Craig. This was the third time during the season the two teams met. The Mustangs had won the prior two games, making Oakland-Craig determined to not be beat a third time. Both teams came out on the court to play ball but the Mustangs fell short in three close sets, 22-25, 23-25, and 24-26. The roll of the ball off the net did not play in the Mustang favor, commented Coach Klinetobe. The girls would have the momentum on their side until Oakland-Craig would send the ball back over, hitting the net and rolling over to fall short on the Mustang side. This made it extremely hard for the defense, who were in their positions, to dive and dig up the ball. The luck of the roll wasn’t on our side tonight, stated Coach Klinetobe. Leading from the service line was Kelsey Bernbeck 14/11 with two aces and eight points, and Allison Flood 10/10 with three aces and six points. Sydney Schellpeper also had a nice night from the service line, serving 100% with 7/7 and one ace. Sam Unger and Kennedy Cheyney led with serve receives, each sending nine to the target. Dasi Sieh had a good night setting the ball up with 54/50 sets and 17 assists. Unger led in kills with eleven, followed by Whitney Heppner with seven. Players also recording kills were Bernbeck, Clausen, and Cheyney with two kills each and Tiffany Hendrickson and Shannon Pestel each with one kill. Blocking for the night was led by Heppner with three, followed by Pestel with two and Clausen with one. Libero, Cheyney led the Mustangs defensively with fourteen digs, followed by Unger with seven. This was a tough loss, as it ended the season for seniors, Sam Unger, Kelsey Bernbeck, Tiffany Hendrickson, and Sam Weis. The Mustang volleyball team closed the season with a 6-24 record, which was an improvement from last year. We just need to continue making little improvements in our program and performance each year to build up Mustang Volleyball, commented Coach Klinetobe.
