West Holt
On Monday December 28th the Mustangs hosted the Stanton Holiday Tournament. The first opponent for the Mustangs was the West Holt Huskies. The Huskies had two kids that were averaging about 20 points a game. Coming into the game, shutting those two players down was a top priority for Stanton. In the game the mustangs were able to hold those two players below their averages and keep everyone else in check, which led to the Mustangs posting a 62-56 win. Coach Brown stated “we shot the ball well tonight and did a better job defending in the first half only allowing 23 points”. Josh Herscheid led the Mustangs with 26 points and 3 rebounds. Also helping out was Spencer Nikolite with 15pts, Mark Tomka with 13 points and 9 rebounds, Michael Eberly with 4 points, and Bo Qualls and Tate Erbst had 2 a piece.
Scoring by quarters
Stanton 18-13-13-18=62
West Holt 10-13-14-19=56
Oneill
With the win on Monday, it put the Mustangs in the championship game of their own holiday tournament against Oneill. The Mustangs came out cold from the floor which led to a 3 point deficit at halftime. Oneill shot 70% in the first half but only found themselves winning by 3 at half. In the second half the Mustangs took a 2 point lead going into the 4th period. In that 4th period the Mustangs only scored 11 points due to some good defense by the Eagles and some shooting lulls by the Mustangs. The Eagles went on to win the holiday tournament with a 59-54 win over the Mustangs. Coach Brown stated “Whenever you shoot the ball in 30% range and miss 9 free throws it’s going to be hard to win close games. Give Oneill credit they played good defense, also give credit to our kids they fought all the way to the end but just didn’t have some shots fall.”
