Wrestling: Madison and Oakland

By Thomas King

January 25, 2010

The team travelled to Madison and came away with the runnerup trophy out of 15 teams with Madison winning it. We had a lot of kids step up and really wrestle well in a weekend that we dubbed a mental weekend that would be just like the district tournament which we will hold in 3 weeks here at Stanton. We will have to wrestle mentally and physically tough each match to qualify for state.
We scored a 152.5 points at Oakland and finished 5th out of 14 teams. Winside won it with 182 points.
The team’s results for the weekend are:
Jake Betzen finished 2nd at Madison and 4th at Oakland for another great weekend.

Brennan Borgmann came up with a big win over state ranked Jeff Obrien of WPCC to finish 3rd at Oakland losing to Sean Pillie OC. We need to get him more consistent and wrestle with the confidence he has in the big matches as he fell to 6th place at Madison after beating a Skutt kid in the first round. He has the heart to wrestle with anyone when he believes in him.

Paul Cheyney finished 1st at Madison with a pin of Jake Smutny Madison and then in the semifinals at Oakland he won his 100th match of his career with a 21-4 win over Ben Burmeister. He then defeated hometown favorite Kevin Jacobson Oakland to win the tournament. When he wrestles to our game plan he is unstoppable but when he lets down and lets the other guy hang around it gives them a shot to pull the upset.

Jake Smutny MAD pin
Adam Burnheide HOW 14-3
Ben Burmeister PEN 21-4
Kevin Jacobson OC 6-5

Jeb Nordby finished another weekend of 5 matches a day which seems to be his goal each week, the best thing is he’s winning more of them then he is losing so mat time is good. He finished tied for 3rd with match limits at Madison and then came back Saturday and finished 3rd losing only to state ranked Zach Brokaw WIN who at this point wrestles more physically then we do, but the score was closer this time.

Jacob Bohac finished a nice weekend with a win at Oakland and then wrestling great matches when  finishing his shots would have resulted in two more wins. He keeps going hard and when it clicks he will be tough.

Our experiment with Bryant continues for one more week as we make decisions based on his weight class. He finished 2nd to state ranked Chad Koch HCC in a 6-2 loss at Madison. We then bumped up to 25 where we would see the top 4 wrestlers all undefeated in the state and 2 of them ranked #1 and the other two ranked #2 in the state. He had good matches, but with some work on his shots they end up going the other way. He lost 5-3 to Nathan Bazata How and then lost to Josh Powell 5-3 of Kenesaw.
