By Jason Brown

January 25, 2010

On Monday January 18th the Mustang basketball teams traveled to Oakland-Craig to make up a game that was postponed earlier due to a snow storm.  It was a back and forth game for much of the game.  Oakland-Craig was able to make a few more plays down the stretch and beat the Mustangs 44-38.  The Mustangs were led by Spencer Nikolite with 15 points, and Blake Heppner, Michael Eberly, and Josh Herscheid all put in 5 points a piece.

Next up for the Mustangs was Logan View at home on Friday.   This game was very tight the entire way.  Each team would make little runs to push out the lead, just to find the other team to answer it.  The game was tied with 40 seconds left and Spencer Nikolite dove down the land and dished it off to Blake Heppner for the go-ahead bucket.  Logan View came down made a shot and got fouled and then converted the free throw with 6 seconds left.  Josh Herscheid then took the ball and got to the basket only to have the ball roll off the rim and Logan View was able to hold on 57-56.  Coach Brown stated “this was a tough one to loose; the kids battled hard all night but just came up a bit short.”  The Mustangs were led by Spencer Nikolite with 17 points, Michael Eberly with 11 points, Josh Herscheid with 9 points, and Blake Heppner with 8 points.

The last game of the week was at home against Lyons-Decatur Northeast.  The Mustangs came out shooting the ball well.  Josh Herscheid scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the first half.  The Mustangs were able to get some easy transition baskets which really opened things up offensively.  Stanton went on to win the game 69-60.  Coach Brown commented “this game was very good for our team, we were very balanced in scoring and the biggest thing was that some kids off the bench really stepped up and made some big plays for us down the stretch.”  After Herscheids 18 points, was Blake Heppner with 13 points, Michael Eberly and Spencer Nikolite each had 10 points.
