PAUL CHEYNEY TAKES DOWN FIRST STATE TITLE
Another great season comes to an end at the state tournament where we finished 9th as a team by scoring 54 points and we were one of 6 teams in the top 10 from our district. The strength of our district was evident as we put 16 of the 28 finalist in the championship matches with at least one at every weight. We might not take as many qualifiers as other schools but they are quality ones we do and we leave a lot of great ones home. We as a team want to thank everyone that comes down and supports us every week. I also want to thank Mark Christensen for coming in the last two weeks and look forward to his help next ear. Also those wrestlers that come back and give us the support that they were given when they were coming through. Each year we have high expectations no matter the age of our wrestlers and that is what separates us from others as we go through the season. We brought our third state champion in a row home over the last three years and have also placed another kid in the finals each of the past two years which makes us believe that they have bought into what we are doing. We also thank our families who give up a lot for us to make this our second family and a successful program that can keep rising. Finally thanks to an my awesome assistant coach who makes this the ideal coaching situation for me. Our 2010-2011 season starts Tuesday as we build our little kids and get ready for the off season training. So see you next year and it can’t come soon enough. We only lose one senior and bring back everyone including Michael McCarthy 2-11, Jacob Bohac 9-19, Hunter Hetzler 2-0, Colby Wolff 27-9, and Brennan Borgmann 26-15.
Senior Paul Cheyney took down his first state title, after a state runner-up finish last year, and also set the single season win record held by assistant coach and 4 time state finalist Randy Hansen. He has been so consistent this year on the mat and his leadership was evident by those who attended our homecoming at the gym Saturday night and watched how our team responded to him. I want to thank him for a great career through the ups and downs we came out where we worked so hard to be. Great job and best of luck in all you do, and remember I’m most proud of the way you handled the pressure of being #1 from wire to wire and the person you’ve become more than I’m for the medal you received.
Alex Snyder cross county 12-4 won
Pat Gardner Arapahoe 8-0 won
Jacob Schwan heartland Lutheran 9-6 won
Adam kahle Dorchester 9-5 won
Bryant Borgmann had a great run to the state championship math where he would face Riley Santin of Palmer. H e would get pinned in the 3rd period only down 1-0. He will be looked on next year to lead us as a team and get back to the championship match. He finishes the season 33-8
Joe Gregory Ansley 7-0 won
Gus Petersen Cambridge 4-0 won
Nicholas Licking Mullen 5-3 won
Riley Santin Palmer pin lost
Jeb Nordby finished out his freshmen year by going 33-17 where he lost to Tyler Wichman Palmer the eventual state champ from Palmer 6-0. He did pick up a win which is a great accomplishment.
Tyler wichman Palmer 6-0 Lost
Thomas Schroeder Medicine valley 1-0 won
Nick Farmer EPP pin Lost
Grant Nordby a 3 year state qualifier had a great year finishing 30-14 for us but not with the desired place we had hoped for. This kid gives our community everything he has and one that is a total asset to us. As a coach this one hurts when we come so close but can’t finish due to mistakes on my part. We led 5-1 to Barry when he pinned us with 30 seconds to go and then we lose in OT to Ellers. He will provide us with great leadership and a desire to get better will drive him to that medal stand next year as a senior.
Lane Barry Amherst pin Lost
Trent Ellers Aquanis 4-2 OT Lost
Sophomore Mick Clausen finished his 29-16 season with a monster run through the state tournament by going 2-2 and being one match away from a medal Friday night. He has come along way from his Freshmen year and we look for bigger things to come as long as he puts the time in from here on. I was very proud of him after that first match where nerves controlled us more than the opponent but after that he showed up and wrestled his heart out.
William Meyer Palmer 6-0 Lost
Devon Sullivan Garden County pin won
Jacob Wells Anselmo Merna pin won
Issac Elge NEC 8-2 lost
Jake Betzen finished a great season 21-20 by winning a match at state. Leading 2-0 in the 2nd he lost to Drew Riggs after not being able to catch his breath, otherwise I believe we would have medaled. These type of kids are the reason we coach. You watch them grow and come out of their shell and be a part of a family that believes in each other no matter who they are and as long as they put the quality time in.
Drew riggs NPSP 4-2 Lost
Ethan Enochs Overton 9-4 won
Dalton Graybeal WPC 6-1 lost
