Mustangs Fall Short in Home Opener

Mustangs fall just short in home opener

Last Friday night the Stanton Mustang Football team opened the season at home against the David City Scouts. David City scored on the first play of their 2019 season and took an early 7-0 lead, after team traded punts, the Scouts would score again on a 57 yard 4th and play to take a 13-0 lead. Just as the first half was ending the scouts would once again score on 4th and touchdown pass. At halftime David City would be up 19-0. “We simply gave up too many big plays in the first half. We just encouraged the kids to keep battling, and trust what they have been taught to do”, said coach Stoddard.

To start the second half, the Mustangs did just that, the offense marched the ball down the field on a 14 play drive capped off by a Sutton Pohlman 8 yard run to make the score 19-6. After a couple of stops the by each team the Mustangs would score again on 26 yard touchdown pass, as Parker Krusemark connected with Trey Elbert. After a failed conversion the game was back in reach at 19-12. The Mustang defense would once again come up with big stop and the offense put together a promising drive that ended just short on the David City 35 yards line and the game ended with a 19-12 final. “We fell short of winning the  game, but I’m proud of how the kids battled back from adversity, we unfortunately came up a little short at the  end. We have a lot to build on and look forward to this season”, said Stoddard. The Mustangs will be on the road at 1-0 Tekamah-Herman next week, kickoff is at 7pm. The program would like to thank all the community members who attended the week one game and hopes to see another big turnout in Tekamah.
