GBB Mustangs Improve to 10-5
The girls basketball team improved to 10-5 on the season as they went 3-0 last week. The Mustangs started their long week off by traveling to Plainview to take on the Pirates and walking away with a 58-24 victory. All twelve girls saw action in the contest. Collectively, the Mustangs took away 21 passes which made for easy shots on offensive end of the floor.
Boone Central/Newman Grove came into Stanton to take on the girls in a well-played, game by both teams. Stanton took a 12-11 lead after the first quarters, but the Lady Cardinals answered by outscoring the Mustangs by 6 in the second quarters, going into halftime with a 26-21 lead. After a few halftime adjustments, Stanton came back out in the second half and outscored the Cardinals 21-13 and made some clutch free throws to lock in their second victory of the week. The Mustangs had 9 assists on 15 baskets, went 10-17 from the free throw line, and grabbed 32 rebounds and 15 steals.
The final contest of the week was at home against the Battle Creek Bravettes on Saturday. The game was very competitive from wire to wire, but both teams played sloppy and turnovers were an issue for both teams. Battle Creek took a 17-14 halftime lead. Stanton pulled a point closer in the third quarter, as they trialed 29-27 going into the final quarter. In the 4th quarter, Stanton took control by seizing several Battle Creek turnovers and hitting big shots down the stretch. They outscored the Bravettes 17-5, which carried them to a 44-34 victory over a very athletic Battle Creek team.
This week, the girls will host Madison on Tuesday night. Junior varsity will begin at 4:30, with varsity starting around 6:00.
