C Team/JV Article
The Stanton Boys basketball C Team has been active with games since the beginning of the season. The team has been focused on growth and development, with an emphasis on having fun throughout the process. As a team built of freshmen and sophomores, not only is there fundamental development, but also establishment of a comfort level in the game of basketball with new teammates. The boys have proven to be up for the challenge.
Sophomores Matt Reese, Ian Schulzkump, Gage Tighe, Trey Elbert, and Gunnar Davidson, along with Freshmen Cole Rutten, Thomas Cunningham, Adam Arens, Ben Butterfield, and Abe Larson have all played an important role in the development of their peers and team.
The team opened the season with a win over Madison 47-33 but has been unable to find another win thus far this season. Last week the team traveled to Lutheran High Northeast to face a talented Eagle team. The game started as a defensive battle deep into the first quarter, with a total of 6 points being scored over the first 5 minutes of the game. Unfortunately the Eagles finished the quarter on an offensive flurry and never looked back, winning the game 51-21.
The Mustang C-Team looks to end their year at a tournament in Wisner on January 19th. Coach David Morfeld said , “I’m excited to see this team perform in a tournament setting to end the year. This is a great group of young men that have developed a joy for the game. They have grown all season and deserve to see strong results from their efforts. If they continue to play smart and apply the tools that they have learned in practice, it will be an exciting weekend in Wisner.”
The Stanton Boys JV Team travelled to Plainview on January 8th for their most recent action of the season. The team lost a hard fought battle, 16-13, playing only two quarters for the night. Despite a strong defensive effort, free throws paved the way for a Plainview victory as the Mustangs were outscored at the line 8 to 0. The Mustangs will look to rebound and end their season strong as the season quickly approaches the conference tournament.
A young team, the JV boys’ team is comprised of one junior, seven sophomores and 5 freshmen. Members are junior, Ben Wilke. Sophomores, Brennan Wragge, Mason Bruggeman, Matt Reese, Trey Elbert, Ian Schulzkump, Gage Tighe, and Gunnar Davidson, and the Freshmen include Abe Larson, Adam Arens, Ben Butterfield, Thomas Cunningham and Cole Rutten.
As the season enters the final 6 weeks, the Mustang JV team will look to capitalize on their development and comfort level found within the system. Coach Matt Alexander is looking forward to watching the team compete at a high level against some tough competition to end the year. “We have come a long way since the beginning of the season and have improved by leaps and bounds. It’s time for us to put together a whole game and earn that win.”
